Bit expensive and minimal, but awesome looking theme.

Screen Shot 2013-10-25 at 12.56.15Salient is a beautiful wordpress theme featured on ThemeForest. It fully supports video as a background which looks quite spectacular. With 6300 sales, they are definitely popular. While Salient doesn’t have as many templates as some other themes (there are only two types of blogs), the theme is really nicely designed and well worth the price.

Resident Designer’s Opinion

Salient is amazingly nice looking on first load, the video background showcases the main feature of the site straight away. For a film studio or related industries this theme is a must have, but I can imagine it for other websites like gaming as well. One thing I don’t like is the gray text on gray background, which for me is hard to read. The original teal links also blend too much with the background, this needs work. Generally it’s an understandable layout, and for showcasing video it is really amazing.

Salient is a theme that on first glance is really impressive, but on the default colour scheme we don’t actually like it that much. While the layout is good, it is hard to read due to the colours used. This might focus a user on the video content, which is the goal, but I don’t think it works that well.

Screen Shot 2013-10-25 at 12.56.15The theme features two styles of blogs, which is slightly less options than some other premium themes. There is a masonry style blog:

Shop Style

There is only one style of shop on Salient, which again is less than some other types of themes. But to be fair it is very nice looking.

Portfolio Style

The portfolio style contains a nice gallery style of page, check this out:

However there is also a scrollable “app selling” type design, which is becoming more and more popular recently.

Salient is a very nice theme for video backgrounds, and for that it is worth the $55 price tag. But for a general blog where this isn’t necessary, it is overpriced. There are less layout options than some other themes, and the colours are not perfect. So it is a bit of a niche product, and not necesarily worth the $55.

Very nice theme for video backgrounds, and therefore for a niche that uses these it is perfect and definitely a buy. But for your general brick and mortar blog, there are some much better themes out there.
