Summary:

Retailer

The Retailer is a WooCommerce WordPress theme available from ThemeForest. Unsurprisingly from the name, this theme is specifically designed for online shops.

The theme also incorporates a portfolio display in anything up to four columns, and an attractive blog layout.

As is increasingly common nowadays, the theme is responsive and retina ready, and includes slider functionality for mobile devices. The Retailer had been downloaded just over 4000 times at the time of our review.

Resident Designer’s Opinion

“The Retailer is a pleasingly attractive retail theme that looks professional but unpretentious. As is often the case with WooCommerce themes, it’s fair to argue that The Retailer is probably best suited to fashion retail. Perhaps it’s just because theme designers always seem to use clothes in their demo sites, but it’s hard to imagine The Retailer being used for other items such as, for example, electrical goods.

Even so, The Retailer is great for fashion, and one thing I absolutely loved was the fast animation that flicks between the front and reverse of an item when you hover your pointer.”

Highlights

Like all the best WooCommerce themes, The Retailer offers plenty of flexibility in terms of core shop layouts. Shown below is the “shop with sidebar” option.

There are also full-width and single product views – the latter is shown below:

As is often the case with shop themes, there are upselling and cross-selling opportunities, however these are quite far down the page and therefore perhaps less effective than some.

The portfolio view is simple but attractive, and available in a range of column options. The four-column layout is shown below.

Aside from the store functionality, The Retailer has an impressive array of pre-designed pages to support all the other elements of an online business. We particularly liked the attractive blog layout, which (unusually) feels like an integral part of the site and not a mere afterthought.

The “Contact” page is attractive too:

Finally, there are plenty of shortcodes available for those who want fine control of their page layouts.

Pricing

The Retailer theme is available from ThemeForest and “retails” at $55 for a standard license, and $2750 for an extended license.

We think the $55 charge is really good value, specifically because the theme author has already done so much of the hard work for you (or your webmaster). There are so many pre-designed pages already built around the shortcodes that this theme really can be a case of “populate and launch.”

Conclusion

Nothing about The Retailer tries to “reinvent the wheel,” and it’s all the better for it. Yes, there are stores that look more “cutting edge;” no, the designer of the theme hasn’t taken any bold design risks; but these are not fair reasons to criticise.

All the important things are covered: the theme works well on mobile, everything looks clean and professional, and all the usual pages you could imagine most people needing are there waiting to be used. If you just want a dependable and slick online store, it’s right here – and we really DO love that animation that shows you the reverse of the items!
