Main Frame

Jarida a modern yet elegant WordPress theme from ThemeForest. It is sold as a news, magazine and blog theme, and while it’s definitely best suited to those uses, there is more flexibility available, with the ability to incorporate a WooCommerce shop and / or a review system.

Like many modern themes, Jarida is “responsive” and ready for mobile use, but with less emphasis on this than some other themes. Jarida isn’t described on ThemeForest as being “retina ready,” for example.

The Jarida theme incorporates a drag and drop home page builder, which makes it easy for designers to get a new site up and running. Documentation is reasonably good too, and includes a few video guides.

Resident Designer’s Opinion

“Jarida is a theme that manages to remain traditional looking without appearing outdated. It does include the ability to incorporate an online shop, thanks to WooCommerce integration, but it’s really best suited to the uses it’s recommended for: blogs, magazines and news sites.

The theme is quite customisable in terms of how it presents information – column layouts for blog posts are particularly flexible. However, there’s not masses you can do to change the fundamental appearance of a site built with Jarida, beyond changing colours and choosing between a two or three column layout.”

As you can see from Jarida’s main preview page, this is a great theme for a modern, media-rich blog. This screenshot shows the three-column layout, which leaves a good amount of space for advertising.

There is also a two-column layout available. We may have simply not found the option, but we didn’t manage to find a way to see this layout within the preview site.

Two column

Most of Jarida’s key functionality revolves around presenting news and blog content in an attractive way. There are various different post layouts, although it’s fair to say that they’re all fundamentally quite similar. This screenshot shows the “post with featured image” option:

We did particularly like the “post with lightbox” option. This is great for showcasing really good photo content, and the lightbox used is both attractive and functional, with the ability to magnify the lightbox image.

The shop layout is fairly basic, but it offers quite enough for anyone who runs a small e-commerce business alongside a blog or magazine style site. Dedicated online stores will find more functionality elsewhere.

We rather liked the review boxes that come with Jarida. These would be great for dedicated review sites – as long as you don’t mind your review site looking more than a little bit like the PCMAG website!

There are shortcodes included for all the usual basics, such as social networking, audio and video integration. However, we have seen more extensive selections elsewhere.

Finally, it’s worth reemphasising that the home page can be built using a drag and drop interface, making it easy to experiment with basic layouts, and change things as a site evolves.

A standard single-site licence for Jarida costs $55 on ThemeForest. It’s hard to argue that any of ThemeForest’s themes are poor value, but we have seen themes that offer a little more for this price. Even so, if Jarida fits your requirements, you get a theme that looks good and shouldn’t be too overwhelming to mould to your requirements.

Jarida has a clear target market, and we respect the theme author for refraining to deviate from its intended purpose. This is a great theme for an evolving blog, news or review site that will help webmasters showcase their content in a modern yet understated way.

Jarida isn’t “state-of-the-art,” but it doesn’t profess to be. What it IS is clean, well designed, and attractive looking on all devices. It’s a good choice for webmasters looking to take an existing site to the next level.
