If you need a video oriented built from the ground up theme then deTube is a popular choice.  Created by dedepress, deTube is a theme that specializes by far in video showcasing, news and magazine style information.  It is boasted as being the most powerful WordPress theme design specifically for video.  And, with over 3,000 purchases since its July 2012 release, it certainly holds up to that fact.

Designer’s Opinion

I believe I understand what deTube is trying to do so I cannot judge design on the basis of aesthetics.  Most of the “design” is the back-end supporting the need for an eventual massive library of videos.  When you look at the deTube theme from the surface it is actually quite light in terms of default content; one main page and then the potentially limitless category page, which is pretty much it.

Category Pages

The category page is pretty much the only inner page of the deTube theme.  It supports all the necessities for displaying videos.  The page itself is neutral with no purpose until it is given a genre such as comedy or animation.

Sortable Video Lists

deTube has a very nice client-side sorting list for the videos as well as a viewing system that changes without having to refresh the page.  This sort system is quite thorough in giving the user many choices on how the videos are displayed on the page.  You are given the options of views, likes, date, or comments in descending or ascending order.  The viewing system gives you six options in total between grid and list selections that provide choices between gallery displays or video with description.

Regular License: $45
Extended License: $2250

deTube is really worth its $45 price for the amount of effort there was put into supporting video content.  On the surface the theme looks rather generic, but that is because a lot of the work is done in the back.  The purpose of a site is not always about aesthetics but functionality as well.  deTube provides that functionality with various methods of video support. Though, a bit of caution, as of late dedepress has not been commenting back to purchasers so it is unclear how much support you would get should you run into an issue.

The deTube theme is good at what it does which is showcasing videos on multiple browsing platforms.  That is pretty much it really, there is nothing else to the theme save for the compatibility with BuddyPress.  It is however and very nice step for clients who want to be like Youtube or Hulu but don’t want to spend weeks trying to sort out complications that would mostly come up when streaming video is involved.
